Team USA to cut 4 players by Monday
July, 25, 2010 Jul 253:02PM ETImage IPB By Chris Sheridan
Archive LAS VEGAS -- Team USA will cut four players by Monday, and I am going to give you my best educated guess as to who those four players will be.

A couple are easy to predict, a couple are not. So I'll give you a list of six, with my top cut choices are listed one through four.

Tyreke Evans: Missed final two days of practice and Saturday night's public scrimmage with a sore ankle, making for an easy decision as to which of Team USA's many talented point guards can be trimmed from the mix.

Danny Granger: Was good, not great, among a field of wing players in which someone needed to standout. The player who did that was Andre Iguodala.

Gerald Wallace: If anyone Saturday night played himself off the 15-man roster for training camp in New York, it was him. No rebounds, no blocks, no steals, 0-for-4 on 3s in 12:27 of playing time.

Eric Gordon: On the opposite end of the spectrum, Gordon may have bought himself some time. Was a sparkplug, made 4-of-7 3s and had two steals. Brings a toughness that is difficult to discard.

O.J. Mayo: Like Gordon, he played as though he knew his job was on the line: 18 points, seven boards, 3-for-6 on 3s. Fits the way this team wants to play, but hard to see him making final 12.

JaVale McGee: The hard part about cutting him is they don't have anyone else like him - a jumping-jack 7-footer who can spell Tyson Chandler at center. And with Brook Lopez playing poorly while still recovering from mononucleosis, it's difficult to discard a big with a unique skill set.

Team USA managing director Jerry Colangelo said the team was leaning toward bringing as many as 15 players to Europe after playing an exhibition game against France at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 15 and a closed scrimmage against China sometime in the second week of August.

The thinking on bringing 15 across the pond is this: The final 12-man roster for the World Championship in Turkey does not have to be submitted until Aug. 26, and the U.S. federation will want to have a longer look at some of the bubble guys (and have extra players on hand in case of injuries) during a tough three-game exhibition tour -- a back-to-back against Lithuania and Spain on Aug. 21-22 in Madrid, and a game against Greece in Athens on Aug. 25.

Team USA opens the Worlds with three games in three nights Aug. 28-30 against Croatia, Slovenia and Brazil. The schedule then gets super-easy, with an off day Aug. 31, a back-to-back against Iran and Tunisia Sept. 1-2 to close out the first round, then four consecutive days off (if they win Group B) before their Round of 16 single-elimination game Sept. 6. (If the Americans finish 2nd in Group B, they'd play Sept. 5. If they finish 3rd, they'd play Sept. 7).

Splitter postpones practice with Brazilian basketball team

Tiago Splitter said on Sunday that he will arrive later than planned for the Brazilian national basketball team practices in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Recently signed by NBA team the San Antonio Spurs, Splitter will miss the Brazilian national team's second week of practice.

Team head coach Ruben Magnano of Argentina, had expected the forward who was recently named MVP of the Spanish league, would arrive in Brazil on July 23. However, Splitter said he still has some unfinished business to take care of in his new home in Texas. The coach hopes him to come by July 28 in order to form a rhythm with the rest of the team.

Magnano is preparing the national team for the upcoming World Championships in Turkey in August. On August 5, the team will travel to the country's capital city Brasilia for the Super Four tournament with Angola, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Brazil's debut in the World Championships will be on August 28 against Iran. The team is in Group B along with Croatia, Slovenia

Friendly Game Pre-Turkey: Italy vs CroatiaImage IPB
Posted by Coach on July 26, 2010 0 Comments Friendly game played on 24th of July 2010 in Poreč, Croatia. Italy played this game preparing for qualifications for next Eurobasket while Croatia as a preparation game for upcoming World Championship in Turkey. Much younger than usual, this Croatian team came up with a big win by 17 points but there are still some things to be worked on in next weeks. Young players like Tomić, Bogdanović, Žorić, finally got the chance to play for their national team and they played on a high level.

Croatia Preliminary Squad Released
Croatia National Head Coach Josip Vrankovic announced the 17-man Preliminary Squad of their country that will be participating in the upcoming 2010 FIBA World Basketball Championship that will start on August 28 in Turkey. The new National Head Coach named an almost new squad, only retaining six players from the team that competed in the 2009 EuroBasket in Poland.

Toronto Raptors Roko Ukic will banner the team this year. The 25-year old Croatian averaged 3.1 points in limited playing time for Toronto.

Former National Team players Marko Tomas and Stanko Barac are back in the fold after missing the competition last year due to injuries. Both of them are key players of Croatia in the previous international tournament that they participate in.

The 23-year old Barac is still questionable though because he is still nursing a back injury but Coach Vrankovic, who replaced Jasmin Repesa after the EuroBasket, is hoping that he will be healthy before travelling to Turkey.

“Doctors have estimated that with therapy and exercise, Barac should be ready for the start of preparations on July 15,” Vrankovic said.

“We will see at what intensity he is able to participate. He’s an interesting player for the future of the Croatian national team, so we have opted to wait in this situation.” He added.

After having an impressive season with Real Madrid, Ante Tomic was also included in the squad. He had an outstanding scoring season for the Spanish giants this year.

Croatia was drawn in Group B and will play against USA, Slovenia, Brazil, Iran, and Tunisia in the preliminary rounds of the World Basketball Championship.

Slovenia Pinning Hopes on Dragic
Image IPB

Slovenia National Team Head Coach Memi Becirovic and the rest of the team are hopeful that Goran Dragic will be with them when they compete in the 2010 FIBA World Basketball Championships in Turkey on August 28.The two-year NBA player played for the Phoenix Suns last season and he averaged 7.9 points and 3 assists per game as a backup to Steve Nash. In the Playoffs, Dragic helped the Suns reach the Western Conference Finals after averaging 7.6 points per game but they were eventually defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.

Becirovic said that he and Dragic has a constant communication and he has also been in touch with the management of the Phoenix Suns.

“Phoenix’s assistant general manager David Griffin said that Dragic has a great desire to wear the green and white jersey this summer. He will have a medical examination in early July and if he passes it, there will be no obstacles for him joining the national team.” Becirovic said.

The 24-year old point guard played a key role in the Suns’ success this season. In Game 3 of their Western Conference Semifinals against the San Antonio Spurs, Dragic erupted for 26 points in just 17 minutes of playing time.

He was also impressive in the Game 4 of their series against the Lakers after tallying eight points and eight assists in just 18 minutes on the court to help the Suns tie the series at 2-2.

Slovenia is also counting on their Key Players which are currently playing in Italy like Uros Slokar and Sani, who is the son of coach Becirovic. The Slovenian Basketball Federation has confirmed that both of them are willing to don the National Team jersey in the biggest tournament in Basketball.

Slovenia was drawn in Group B together with perennial powerhouse USA, Brazil, Iran, and Tunisia. They will be banking on the support of their countrymen who traveled last year to Poland just to cheer on their National Squad.

JaVale McGee returns to Team USA roster
JaVale McGee is back on Team USA, one week after he was cut from the squad. The Wizards center was added to the roster after New Jersey's Brook Lopez withdrew from the team.

Lopez, who has been recovering from mono, told USA Basketball officials Wednesday he did not believe he was in good enough condition to take part in training camp next week in New York, the Associated Press reported.

McGee joins Tyson Chandler as the only centers on the U.S. roster heading into next week's camp.

The United States will have to cut the team down to 12 players when it competes at the FIBA World Championships in Turkey from Aug. 28 to Sept. 12.

China takes revenge on Iran basketball team
Tehran Times Sports Desk
China got revenge on Iran in the Stankovic Continental Cup on Sunday after losing to this team in the final match of the 2009 FIBA Asia Championship.

The host China, who had defeated Iran 86-64 in Day Two of the event, overpowered the Asian champion again, this time 76-58, and finished third.

Iran had already been beaten by Slovenia and Australia in the tournament in Liuzhou and finished in last place.

Iran is preparing itself for the 2010 FIBA World Championship which will be hosted by Turkey from August 28 to September 12, 2010

Slovenia Reaped Laurel for The Second Time - Aug 1, 2010 (by Eurobasket News)
Slovenia capped Austria 71-60 in the final showdown on August 1st, becoming the champion of Stankovic continental Cup for the second time.
Primoz Brezec scored two points for Slovenia in the opening minutes before Worthington shot behind the arc. Australia then played a 7-2 run. With
Samo Udrih Image IPB (195-G-79) 's impressive performance, Slovenia fought tooth and nail, trimming the deficit to one point. Australia took a modest lead, 16-12 heading into the second quarter.
Australia extended its lead by an early tip-in of Baynes before
Goran Dragic (194-G-86, agency: Interperformances) found touch behind the arc. Slovenia outscored later 24-23 in the second quarter thanks to its shooting charge from both inside and outside presence. Australia trailed, 29-27 at the end of the first half.
Two teams ties the score three times in the third quarter before a three-pointer barrage made Slovenia stood out, prevailing 43-34. They poured in 5 points later as Australia managed to catch up. Slovenia bolted to 49-42 at the end of the third quarter.

The final quarter was intense. Baynes made a jump shot before Dragic buried a three-pointer for Australia. Slovenia kept Australia in check, though Australia shot from the field in a row. Austria mounted a rally then, cutting the deficit to 5 points. As Slovenia extended its lead to 65-57, Australia called timeout, which didn't work well. Eventually, Slovenia reaped the final success, outscoring Australia 71-60.
